Meet the Mentors
Last night was “Meet the Mentors” at TechStars.
We knew going into it that these mentors were all immensely accomplished in fields ranging from venture capital, to technology, to web 2.0. And after talking to them last night, their backgrounds were, in fact, awe-inspiring.
The one thing we hadn’t really planned for was not only how interested they were in hearing about what we were doing, but how much they were willing to help in any way they could. Whether it be tapping their networks for relevant contacts or giving invaluable advice (aka: data) gathered from their own past experiences.
Another thing that we’re starting to learn out here is that despite the high altitude, most Boulderians’ minds still seem to be down in the gutter. Last night we passed an important benchmark, it was the 10th time in three days out here that somebody mistook Ignighter for a group sex site. The 10th time already! In all the time we were building and talking about Ignighter back in New York only one person ever mistook it for a group sex site, and even then it was my pervy Uncle Ira - who had almost completed his Ignighter registration by the time I could convince him that we were group DATING.
One thing we’re trying to determine is if it is a generational gap in comprehension. We think (and hope) it is. Of the 10 group sex misunderstanders we’ve encountered out here, the average age was around 40, with nobody under 30. And Uncle Ira is an old, creepy dude.
So far, young people get it. This is the way we actually go out in real life, with our group of friends. For the most part we’re no longer picking up our dates at their parents’ house at 8pm in our Buick Skylark. We’re going out with our group of friends and meeting another group of friends who we share interests with. Young people (so far) can relate.
Still, the group sex thing is an important note to keep in the back of our heads whether we’re pitching our product to investors or rewriting the copy on our landing page. It needs to be clear that as interesting it would probably be to run a group sex site, that’s not our intention with Ignighter.
