TechStars Go Hiking and Group Dating Ideas Series - #3, Go Hiking

Yesterday a handful of the TechStars went for a hike along the Continental Divide in Eldorado Canyon, CO. It was an awesome chance to get out from behind our monitors and get some exercise while enjoying breathtaking views of mountainous Colorado. And while our trip consisted of nine nerds and only one nerdess, I can see how hiking would make for a really enjoyable, albeit exhausting, group date.

Now some more on the exhausting part.

Last week upon arriving in Boulder, we had lunch with mentor and all around gnarly dude, Jason. An avid hiker, Jason was fielding our ignorant city-boy hiking inquiries and at one point explained, “I have a lot of in-shape people come visit me. But when I take them on a hike for the first time, they can’t believe how good the work out is and how quickly they get their heart racing.”

Admittedly, I kind of shrugged that off thinking, “Hiking is just walking at a slight incline. How hard could it be? I can do the elliptical for 40 minutes at a medium-hard setting.”

And we were absolutely right in thinking that hiking is, in fact, just walking for a while at a slight incline. However, we were absolutely wrong in thinking that doing the elliptical would be anywhere near as strenuous as hiking.

Not only did our hearts race as we shlepped up the mountain, but we also got very light-headed. Before going, a lot of us pegged the trek as a way for us to clear our heads before a busy week. However, I think some of us may have taken that a little too literally. It would’ve been nice to keep some oxygen in there.

As with every shortcoming we’ve displayed since arriving in Colorado, we naturally blamed our out-of-shapeness on the altitude (the same excuse I used when I spilled coffee all over Kevin’s paperwork and the same excuse Dan used when he wore his boxer-briefs over his jeans last week). But this time I think the altitude truly did contribute to our fatigue.

In fact at one point a fellow TechStar, hiking uphill just in front of me, farted and I swear I could actually see the fart linger, motionless in the thinning atmosphere for a moment, like an astronaut. I’m sure, if confronted, the guilty party’s astrogas issue would be blamed on the altitude.

I guess if you are going to go hiking as a group date, I would recommend taking a few dry runs to make sure that you’re in decent hiking shape. Sweating and panting may seem sexy, but not if it’s induced by a walk up a slight incline. Then again, you could always just blame it on the altitude.
