Group Dating Ideas Series - #4, Pub Crawl
Pub Crawls are a great way to turn a routine night out on the town into a into a rip-roaring good time. The heart of the pub crawl fun lies not only in hopping from one bar to the next every 15 minutes, but more importantly, in having a set of rules for what you need to do at each bar. This all needs to be planned out in advance, preferably with some care taken to match the rule to the vibe of each bar you’re going to.
Below are some examples of rules you can set for your pub crawl. Keep in mind that you only have one drink at each bar, if you’ve run out of bars and your night doesn’t feel over, then go back to the beginning and start again:
1. At an Irish Pub - Everyone drinks an Irish Car Bomb.

2. A cocktail bar - Everyone orders “stop light drinks”. That means you get a green drink if you’re single, a red drink if you’re taken, and a yellow drink if your relationship status is dependent on the amount that you end up drinking that night.
3. At a dive bar - Everyone orders the cheapest beer they have, preferably in a can.
Those are drink rules, but you can also create rules that specify specific behaviors at each bar:
1. At this bar everybody introduces themselves to a stranger (people who aren’t participating in the group date) under an alias, but the new name has to be traditionally of the opposite gender. For example, I (Adam) could introduce myself to a stranger as “Rachel”. It’s important to keep a straight face for this one and also to exaggerate your masculinity if you’re a guy and your femininity if you’re a girl.
2. At the next bar everybody on the group date must learn one interesting fact about each member of the other group.
3. At the next bar every person has to buy one drink for one of the other participants of the group date, but they may not buy one for themselves.
The whole point of instituting the rules and structure isn’t meant to make it feel like you’re dating in the former Soviet Union, but rather to provide a little distraction. If you incorporate rules that force you to interact when you drink (simultaneously downing a car bomb…yum) or while you’re standing at the bar (learning one new fact about members of the other group), then the process of getting to know each other happens without the awkward, “uhhh so tell me about yourself”. And if you successfully hit all the bars on your list, vomiting en masse at the end of the night could be a great bonding technique too!
