Group Dating Ideas Series #9 - Live Music

One of my best friends, a young woman we’ll call Nora, has a life rule that goes “There are three things in life that even when they’re bad, they’re still good.” One of them is pizza, another is live music, and the third I don’t feel like typing because my grandparents read this blog (although Mommom’s two favorite shows are Sex and the City and Tell Me You Love Me, so I don’t know why I’m being shy).

Nora and I always debate the pizza issue because she’s from Florida and thinks that CPK is a delicious, authentic pizzeria (she also thinks the girl who works at the Auntie Anne’s Pretzel stand in Penn Station is Amish). I’m a former delivery boy from New Jersey. I think when pizza is good, it’s good. And when it’s not, it sucks. I might be the only person who went to college and stopped eating pizza (I could never wrap my head around the deep dish thing. If I wanted a lasagna in a box I would’ve ordered one).

The live music issue, however, Nora and I can agree on. Live music is always fun. Being out in Boulder, Ignighter has been fortunate enough to see a disproportionately large amount of good live music; including the Soul Patch gig a few weeks ago at Red Fish (photo below).

Soul Patch

Live music (even the crappy stuff) is fun because it can make you feel like you’re doing something more than just sitting at a bar. Suddenly, what you thought was going to be a standard night out at a pub, becomes an intimate concert where you are close enough to feel and share in the energy of the band. Combine this with the company of your friends, or even, say, a group date, and even if the music is bad, the experience can still be really good.

And if the music is great? Well then fuhgetaboutit (trying to play up the Jersey thing to solidify my pizza cred…)! Sharing in great music with a fun group of people, well that can be a transcendent experience.

As for the third thing on Nora’s list, you’ll have to ask her about it, I’m not going there. Aren’t you proud Mommom?
